The way through the streets to the sites of interest in Hildesheim city centre is marked by painted white roses. A guide to the five kilometre rose route is available in a number of languages from the city's tourist information office.
Roman and Pelizaeus museum
The Roman and Pelizaeus museum is famous far beyond the borders of Hildesheim and Niedersachsen. The ancient Egyptian and ancient Peruvian collections are among the most important in Europe. The museum has a wide range of exhibitions.
With the completion of the permanent exhibition "Egypt – 5000 years of history and culture in the realm of the pharaohs“, the visitor is offered a rich overview of the treasures of the Egyptian collection in more than 1,700 square metres of exhibition space. Alongside this, the Roman and Pelizaeus museum also has one of the most beautiful and oldest collections of relics of pre-Columbian culture in ancient Peru. The natural history collection is also well worth seeing. It recreates the development of life, from the earliest traces 3.4 billion years ago up to the time of our early ancestors (Homo Erectus and Homo Sapiens).
UNESCO World Heritage Cathedral and Church of St. Michael
Since as early as 1985, these two churches have been on the UNESCO World Heritage list. They are towering examples of Romanesque architecture and symbolise the creative power of Bishop Bernward, after whom, in Germany, the “Bernwardinic period” is named. The Cathedral and the Church of St. Michael still retain a significant number of unusual features, such as the monumental bronze casts in the cathedral, Christ’s pillar and Bernward’s door, and the richly decorated wooden ceiling in the Church of St Michael.
