Town and Cityscapes - Papenburg
A visit to the ocean giants
Germany’s oldest and longest fen colony (moor settlement) is situated in the north of Emsland, right next to East Friesland and the Netherlands. Lovingly restored fen houses, splendid green areas and 40 kilometres of canals with romantic drawbridges give the sea harbour city its very own appearance: a hint of moor and sea is present everywhere.
On your journey of discovery through the canal and fen city of Papenburg you can experience tradition and culture, for example at the Baroque Altenkamp Manor, in unique combination with modern high-tech facilities on a guided tour of the Meyer shipyard or the ADO International curtain factory. Papenburg is looking forward to your visit!
The most southern sea port city
Papenburg, the city of ship builders and captains, is the southernmost sea port city in Germany and the cradle of the cruise ships. In the visitor centre of the world renowned Meyer shipyard you can observe the construction of the huge ocean cruise ships up close. The docking and transportation of the luxury liners is a spectacular event and attracts thousands of people.
Papenburg in bloom Every year, from spring to autumn, the town is decorated with lots of brightly coloured flowers. The “Flower Show” takes place every four years and immerses the canal town in a wonderful sea of flowers. A total of 750,000 square metres of ornamental plants, cucumbers or herbs are cultivated in the Papenburg nurseries.
Cycling like a professional Papenburg is an oasis for cyclists. As well as the popular trans-regional cycle tour routes, cycle fans will also find an approx. 200 km long cycle tour network: two of the ten routes were personally inaugurated by cycle pros Rudi Altig and Erik Zabel. Active holidays in Papenburg are not just a slogan, but also an invitation to relax. Whether gliding or golfing, sailing or swimming: Papenburg offers something for everyone. In winter, when all canals and open waters are frozen over, the city turns into a veritable ice skating paradise.
