Town and Cityscapes - Lüneburg

Vibrant Hanseatic and salt city

Picture: Lüneburg - historical buildings Lüneburg, the over 1050 year old city built on salt, attracts visitors with its historic cityscape – and in no way resembles a museum exhibition. Salt has been mined here for 1000 years and was transported all over the world by ship from the old harbour. The medieval Town Hall and the side streets of the old town with its characteristic gable houses were witness to the wealth and prosperity still visible today, which the Hanseatic City gained in the Middle Ages. The old harbour in the historic water quarter, also known as the “Stintmarkt” (Fish Market), is nowadays a large open-air row of bars and on summer evenings attracts tourists and locals with its terraces right by the water, quaint student bars and secluded beer gardens.

Picture: Lüneburg - city hall In an attractive contrast to the old cityscape is the visibly young life in the freshly elected Hanseatic city – the only one in Niedersachsen. Thousands of students enjoy their free time over drinks in charming cafés, relaxing in the salt spa, shopping on the cobbled streets. Shopping in the city centre of Lüneburg, which hardly has any traffic, is a real pleasure: a large number of individual shops offers everything that the heart desires.

Beautiful, beautiful town

Beautiful town for which I feel personal pride. My great great grandfather emigrated to South Africa in 1838 from Luneburg. He eventually aquired a 3000 morgen farm in South Africa which he named "Luneburg" after the name of his home town. Is there a way of researching my genealogy? His name was Friedrich Heinrich Wilhelm Stieger born -1820; his father was Johannes Hendrik Stieger and his mother Maria Dorothea Scholtz (information from an old family bible).
