Town and Cityscapes - Hann. Münden

Three-river city and half-timbered jewel in the Weserbergland region

Picture: Hann. Münden - half-timbered houses along the Fulda river (c) Rudolf Wagner Like no other city Hann. Münden is defined by its location on three rivers and its approx. 700 half-timbered houses from six centuries. The medieval city is situated on the river triangle of the Werra, Fulda and Weser. Resplendent half-timbered buildings from all style eras, defence towers, fortification sites, Guelph Castle, the Old Werra Bridge and Weser Renaissance town hall sum up its rich past as a trading town by the water.

All merchants travelling through the town were obliged to unload their goods in Hann. Münden and offer them for sale to the Münden citizens.

Münden has employed people on a voluntary and full-time basis responsible for the preservation of the city and its historic monuments. Thanks to intensive restoration efforts Hann. Münden is nowadays a half-timbered city of European ranking. With the decentralised Expo-2000 project “Wasserspuren” (Traces of Water) – modern water art and interactive water games – an exciting contrast between old architecture and modern art was created on the central old town square.

The many well-signposted cycling tours in Hann. Münden on the Weser (450 km), Werra (300 km), Fulda (200 km) and Werra-Harz-Heide (400 km) make it the ideal starting point for cycling tours through idyllic river landscapes and hikes in the Münden Nature Park and the legendary Reinhard Forest. The rivers also invite you to go canoeing, fishing and boating.
