Town and Cityscapes - Hameln

The historic old town and the Pied Piper attract tourists with their magic

Picture: Hameln - Bäckerstraße The Pied Piper legend has made Hameln (60,000 residents) world famous. The city generated its wealth, however, as conveniently situated trading city on the Weser. This economic boom saw the construction of magnificent ornate houses, which were built by affluent merchants to testify their wealth. This is how Hameln developed into a jewel of the Weser Renaissance.

With its richly embellished, colourful residential houses the entire centre seems like a big, unique open-air museum, but at the same time it has still remained the vibrant focus of the city.
