Town and Cityscapes - Göttingen

The city of knowledge

Picture: Göttingen - old city hall Göttingen – a university city with tradition, charm and quality of life, these are words that can be used to describe the centre of the south of Niedersachsen.

Via the Planetary Path into the city centre
Whichever method of transport you choose you will quickly reach the city in the centre of Germany. If you decide to travel by train follow the Planetenweg (Planetary Path) into the city. Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars line the short route into the historic Old Town. It is perfect for long strolls. Göttingen’s Hanseatic tradition: lots of little shops offering quality and individuality, lifestyle, practical and almost forgotten items and oddities. There is row after row of street cafés in the pedestrian zone. This is where the locals and visitors meet up in a Mediterranean atmosphere to "see and be seen."

With a little bit of luck, visitors to Göttingen will bear witness to a long-established tradition on the market square: after passing their doctorate exams, daredevil ex-students have been climbing up the market fountain for over 100 years to kiss the bronzed fountain figure, the Gänseliesel, who is indisputably becoming the most-kissed girl in the world.

Culture for all
In the evenings the rich culture life of the city fulfils every wish: theatre, orchestra and performing arts stages offer something for every taste. The highlights of the event calendar include the International Händel Festival, the Göttinger Night of Culture, the Literaturherbst literature festival and the Göttingen Jazz Festival, which attract visitors from both home and abroad.

The city in the weeks before Christmas. In the heart of the Old Town is a Christmas market with over 80 stands. This is where craftsmen show off their skills. Children have fun on the historic big wheel, while their parents enjoy one of the different kinds of mulled wine. Then you are sure to find the perfect gift for everyone on a shopping tour through the decorated streets.

Through the underworld and the pub scene
Groups of travel enthusiasts will also find what they are looking for on a visit to Göttingen. Over 25 themed guided tours are offered by the tourist information office all year round, e.g. through basements and pubs, in the old pan salt works or dressed up into the Middle Ages. And the best thing about it: travelling in the city is not expensive. From 46 Euro you can book a two-day stay including plenty of extras.
