What the bear is for Berlin, is the lion for the people of Braunschweig. Very few people are as defining for Braunschweig’s history as the Lion - the mighty Guelph, who made Braunschweig his city of residence in the mid-12th century. The renewed role of Braunschweig as a residence city of the Guelphs (since 1753/1754) is documented by the reconstructed residence castle.
Together with numerous sights, the city itself was witness to the rich history and culture of Braunschweig, which is also defi ned by personalities like Ricarda Huch, Louis Spohr or Ephraim Lessing. With Carl Friedrich Gauß, for example, research in the German “City of Science 2007” has a long tradition. In the research region of Europe, as declared by the EU, science and economy work hand in hand. Braunschweig’s charming side on the other hand can be experienced on the river Oker, which fl ows through the attractive city centre or in the magnificent parks. We wish you a very warm welcome!
