You'll be amazed by the idyllic river valleys and lakes, woods with majestic oaks, heathland in bloom and sand dunes. The Wildeshauser Geest nature park is perfect for a prolonged stay. The Geest (which means dry, unfertile coastal land) is a central part of the great North German Geest ridge, which stretches from Meppen on the Dutch border along the North Sea coast to Bremerhaven.
The nature park is excellent for enjoying relaxing activities in the countryside. First off there's cycling. All the park's villages and attractions are linked by signposted cycle paths. Walking and riding are also popular activities, as is boating.
Those more interested in history and archaeology will be delighted by the variety of architectural and archaeological monuments, watermills, windmills and museums. Situated a little way outside of the nature park, is the museum village of Cloppenburg, set in parkland, an island of green with impressive country architecture from the last 300 years.
