Like no other city in Niedersachsen, Hildesheim has got its good national as well as international reputation thanks to its culture. In 1985, Hildesheim had already two monuments incl. their art treasures added to the list of world heritage sites by UNESCO: St. Michael, one of the most beautiful early Romanesque churches in Germany, and the cathedral with its impressive bronze casts. Both monuments are excellent examples of Romanesque architecture.
A particularly beautiful natural monument entwines the cathedral: the 1000-year-old rose tree – shrouded in legend. It is responsible for the city’s byname “rose city”. The Knochenhauer-Amtshaus (the office building of the Knochenhauer) in the heart of the city was built in 1529. Its gable reaches an impressive height of 26 meter. It was not only a sign of civic power and wealth at the time, but is also considered an artistic masterpiece of the late Gothic period. It is generally accepted to be the “most beautiful timbered house in the world”.
