In the open-air museum in Cloppenburg's museum village, the village idyll of typical half-timbered houses is complete. Some visitors at first glance yearn to escape the stress and strain of everyday life for the apparent peace and contentment of a bygone era, when life wasn't centred around the computer, mobile phone or television, and the family sat around a warm fire telling stories. But the idyll is deceptive. Because what may at first appear romantic, on closer inspection turns out to be a place of hard work. Whether farrier, miller or farmer, the people here work just like they used to 200 years ago, and their main tools are their own muscles.
History is brought to life
The open-air museum offers special guided tours for school children and groups with children. The young visitor can learn all about indigo printing, prepare their own food olden-days style or they can take the village school leaving certificate.
Opening times: March to October 9 am - 6 pm, November to February 9 am - 4.30 pm
