Wolfsburg - A young and modern city with a traditional background
Founded in 1938 as the “town of the KdF car” (the “strength through joy” car, later known as Volkswagen), in 1945 it was given its name, after the 700-year old Wolfsburg Castle. The founding family of Wolfsburg Castle was the powerful and noble Bartensleben family, until it was handed over to the Schulenburg Earls in the 18th century. In 1962 the city of Wolfsburg became the proud owner of the castle.
The impressive building in the style of the Weser Renaissance is not only the namesake of the city, but also the cultural focus. Inside the castle is the City Gallery with artworks from the 20th century, the Art Association with constantly changing exhibitions and the city museum in the castle remise with insights into the castle and local history. Changing exhibitions, concerts and events in and around Wolfsburg Castle, like the Garden Romantic exhibition or the Knight’s Festival, round off the Wolfsburg Castle experience. During your visit you will find out a lot about the origins and history, and knights, earls and ghosts.
The history of Wolfsburg continues to be defined by the Fallersleben Castle and the Neuhaus Castle. The Fallersleben Castle was created in the 16th century under the building owner Duke Franz von Braunschweig and Lüneburg, who introduced reformation in Germany. His spouse, Duchess Clara, received the Fallersleben Castle as her widow’s seat and had it completed in 1551. The castle is a medieval halftimbered building, which was surrounded by a water ditch. Today the castle houses the Hoffmann-von-Fallersleben Museum and a painting gallery with pictures by Franz Hoffmann-Fallersleben.
The Neuhaus Castle – the medieval moated fort in the district of Neuhaus was built in the 14th century by Guelph Duke, Magnus the Younger, and the town of Braunschweig, which still today, is regarded as one of the best preserved medieval moated castles. Go on a tour of discovery in the castles of Wolfsburg and experience the exciting era of the knighthood.
