Castles and gardens in Emsland

Classic grandeur and sumptuous splendour

Picture: Emsland - garden festival at Clemenswerth Castle The most famous is the Baroque Clemenswerth Castle in Sögel (1737-47). Nowhere else in Europe can such a fully preserved hunting lodge with central building and eight pavilions between imposing avenues be found. The Baroque Castle Park is perfect for a stroll.

The Clemenswerth hunting lodge in Emsland soars out of the Hümmling ridge of hills. Ist namesake “Clemenswerth = Island of Clemens,” was built between 1737-1747 by the renowned master builder Johann Conrad Schlaun, as a refuge for electoral prince Clemens August. It is in the form of an eight-pointed hunting lodge amidst dense forests and the only one in the world preserved in the original structure. In the centre of the site is the main pavilion, which was only used by the electoral prince, surrounded by a circle of another eight pavilions for courtiers and guests. A castle chapel with monastery and a large kitchen complete the ensemble. The castle garden with the Baroque designed fl owerbeds and impressive taxus hedges, which still come from the period of Clemens August, is one of the most beautiful Baroque gardens in north-west Germany.

A highlight of the Emsland culture summer is the “Kleine Fest im großen Park” (Small festival in the Grand Park) on the last Saturday in August: in front of the Baroque backdrop of the Clemenswerth hunting lodge in Sögel internationally renowned artists enchant their huge audience with acrobatics, theatre, comedy, music, dance, entertainment, pantomime, cabaret and circus.

If you are planning on getting married then why not say “I do” in this dream setting? An experienced team from the Sögel municipality will take care of fulfi lling individual wishes, from the bridal carriage down to the rings.

Impressive taxus hedges define the garden. There are three manor houses in Haren: the Dankern moated castle is the centrepiece of a quaint holiday park, Düneburg Manor is situated in the middle of a golf course, Haus Landegge offers the ideal setting for riding holidays.
