The Niedersachsen Milk Route

Milk makes you strong and healthy - particularly when you are physically active on a daily basis. You can follow the trails of the Niedersachsen dairy industry on several bicycle routes. 13 farmers have opened their doors to cyclists of all ages to whom they demonstrate the milking systems and explain how the dairy industry operates. Take one of these routes and you will learn many fascinating things about the milk from the Stade district's friesian cows.
Route 1 takes you from the cow stall to the dairy, through the microcosmos of the "Geest" coastal sandy moorlands. After a glass of ice cold milk, continue along route 2, with the theme of udder, churn and centrifuge. Route 3 is moorland economy and high-tech cows - milk processing in the 21st century is a high tech business, every cow is registered and wears a data chip around its neck. Nevertheless, a visit to the farm is just like in the good old days. The cows sit peacefully around, chewing the cud and big cow eyes meet those of delighted children. On route 4 in the north, butter is made just as it was 100 years ago. Take a bicycle trip along the milk route and find out all about moor and cow, milk and butter, quark and cheese.
