Skipper in Emden

Every year at the start of June Emden celebrates a small fish: the Matjes, or pickled new herring. The Matie Festival (Matjes Festival) is being held in the seaport town of Emden for the 23rd time this year, and is inspired by the Emden herring fishery tradition which goes back more than 450 years. For centuries the herring provided a livelihood for many families, until the East Frisian herring fishery was relocated to Bremerhaven in 1969. For this reason the Emden city fathers decided to create the Matjes Festival to commemorate this old tradition. During the days of the festival many traditional ships from Germany and other countries moor in the inner harbour and on the Ratsdelft canal and restore a touch of bygone maritime romance to the town.
