Due to extensive renovation work, St. Mary's Cathedral (Mariendom) will remain closed to visitors until it reopens in August 2014. As part of the refurbishment project, St. Antonius church, which adjoins the cathedral, is being converted into the new cathedral museum. The new museum will be opened in time to mark the anniversary of the diocese in 2015, and the many valuable exhibits and costly items, which form one of the most important ecclesiastical treasures in Europe, will be presented in much larger surroundings. While the renovation work continues, visitors can still access the famous 1000-year-old rosebush on the cathedral apse and the cloisters. Some of the cathedral’s most important treasures are on display elsewhere in Hildesheim.
