Cycling in Emsland

Flat land for the perfect cycling experience

Have you always wanted to leap onto your saddle (again) and set off on tour? Then Emsland is the place for you! The green region bordering on Holland is the ideal place for a cycling holiday. Ride along the magnificent green valleys of the Ems and Hase rivers, across mysterious moors and ancient fields. Idyllic little towns and villages offer comfortable accommodation and places to eat. Become an Emsland fan!
Many highlights lie directly next to the cycle routes. Marvel at the sheer size of the cruise ships built at the Meyer Werft shipyard, the world’s largest steam plough in the Moor Museum or the giant greenhouses of Emsflower, the region’s biggest plant grower. And when you catch your first glimpse of the baroque palace at Clementswerth at the end of the tree-lined avenue, the maritime promenade in Haren or the historical buildings in Haselünne, then you know your holiday has truly started!
There’s no lack of fun or gourmet pleasure, either. A trip on the narrow gauge railway, a canoe tour, a day in the climbing park, crazy golf or games in the forest - all these activities promise fun for the whole family. Or how about a round of golf or a day in a spa? Coffee and cake in one of the many charming farmhouse cafes is bound to become an eagerly anticipated daily ritual.
The Emsland Route (300km round trip) will whet your appetite for more. Why not take a trip on one of the region’s long-distance cycle routes? There’s never a dull moment along the Dortmund-Ems Canal with all the locks and ships. The Ems Cycle Route received a four-star rating from Germany‘s ADFC cycle club; the Geest Route links the Ems with the ancient Hanseatic city of Bremen; the Hase-Ems Tour stands for romantic cycling along riverbanks; and the German-Dutch United Countries Tour offers two cultures along one route.
Maps, clear signposting, bikes for hire, luggage taxis, a bicycle bus which can be used to shorten a day’s ride and specially priced tickets for buses and trains are all part of the service for cyclists in this region. The booking team at the Emsland Tourist Office will be happy to help with lots of advice and useful tips.
