Between the Elbe river and the round villages of the Hanoverian Wendland, Niedersachsen’s “Wild East” is great for cycling, and a network of cycle routes traverse the beautiful and diverse natural landscape on the eastern edge of the Lüneburger Heide. Forests, quiet country roads and signposted cycle routes await adventurous cyclists of all abilities.
One of the highlights of the Elbe river cycle route – which has plenty of places for cyclists to stop off or overnight along the way – is the biosphere reserve Niedersächsische Elbtalaue. Part of the cycle route along the Elbe runs along the former border between East and West Germany, and is a pleasant stretch to admire the local flora and fauna. This still sparsely populated region is perfect for a stress-free and relaxing holiday.
